Burger King continues to expand its menu, this time adding a head-turning new item which combines the golden goodness of macaroni and cheese and the chip staple Cheetos Puffs.
Dubbed Mac ‘n Cheetos, the item will appear on BK menus for eight weeks, or while supplies last. Essentially, it’s mac and cheese covered in a Cheetos-flavored breading and deep fried. You’ll be able to cop a five-pack for $2.49.
“We’re partnering up with one of Americans’ favorite brands,” Alex Macedo, president of North America at Burger King, said in an interview. “It’s quite unique.”
Burger King has come up with a number of new menu items already this year as they try to maintain their standing in the fast-food arms race. Earlier this year, they started serving grilled Oscar Meyer hot dogs backed by a huge ad campaign. They also brought out the Egg-normous Burrito and Chicken Fries Rings. But these Mac ‘n Cheetos are next level ish.
With this move, BK appears to be tapping into Taco Bell’s wave as the faux Mexican fast-food chain was the first to try a similar tactic back in 2012. The introduction of the Doritos Locos Taco that year helped boost lagging sales for the Bell and was followed up by Cool Ranch, Nacho Cheese and Fiery Doritos, which still remain a menu item to this day.
The fast-food burger giant doesn’t plan on resting on its laurels. “We’re working on a few other menu items,” Macedo said. “There’s room for us to do more together in the future.”
